Following a statement from another artist that implied that I did not know even the basics of oil painting I was feeling a bit discouraged. I went home and opened my kiln. One of the pots that came out seemed to represent a spirit rising. I started to explore the theme in painting singing to myself the song " You can't kill the spirit". As I painted in my studio at wasps I listened to my little radio. The invasion of Ukraine unfolded and as the layers of oil paint went on the painting became more and more about the Ukrainian spirit.
A year on from the invasion the Ukrainians cling on. "You can't kill the spirit".
